SWEN Blue Ocean is a direct impact strategy focused on investing in innovative solutions that regenerate ocean biodiversity, contributing to the achievement of SDG #14. The fund aims to back startups that deliver both systemic impact and competitive market returns, specifically targeting solutions to overfishing, ocean pollution, and marine-related climate change issues. They believe that aligning science and finance is crucial for driving system-level change, and therefore partner with research and academic institutions to accelerate science-backed innovations. The strategy launched its first fund at the World Conservation Congress of the IUCN in 2021, in scientific partnership with Ifremer. SWEN Blue Ocean 2 launched at the UN Ocean Conference in June 2025. To date, the strategy has mobilized over €300 million for ocean startups, with over 85% of the capital coming from institutional investors. The fund appears to have a strong emphasis on measurable impact and a commitment to supporting companies that are not only financially viable but also contribute significantly to ocean health. SWEN Blue Ocean partners with organizations such as Ifremer and Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions, demonstrating a commitment to integrating scientific expertise into their investment process.
