Investment Thesis

Nefco, the Nordic Green Bank, is an international financial institution owned by the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden). Its purpose is to promote investments of Nordic environmental interest, with a focus on Eastern Europe. Nefco accelerates the green transition by providing financing for activities that deliver environmental and climate-related benefits. The firm aims to fill funding gaps by stepping in early and sharing expertise to help Nordic green solutions scale up faster and mobilize investments from public and private actors. Nefco operates through its own revolving capital (Investment Fund) and donor-funded programmes. The Investment Fund, a for-profit fund operating on market terms, provides loan and equity-type financing for green investments, retaining all earnings for new investments. Donor funds are managed on behalf of various donors, including the Nordic governments, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the European Union, to support their goals. These funds are often used for feasibility studies, technical assistance, capacity building, and incentivizing sustainable businesses in new markets. Nefco's strategy for 2026-2030 emphasizes impact, scalability, and Nordic interest, strengthening Nordic environmental interests by focusing on the Nordic and near regions, particularly Eastern Europe. Strong emphasis is placed on Ukraine’s green recovery and Moldova’s green transition, while continuing to support environmental improvements across the wider Baltic Sea region. The firm is committed to ensuring that funds are used for the intended purposes and in line with international standards and best practices, fostering a culture of integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct. Nefco's investment focus includes new market expansion and scale-up of green solutions developed by Nordic SMEs, municipal recovery schemes and support for the green transition in Eastern Europe, incentivizing business models to increase access to clean energy and modern cooking in Sub-Saharan Africa, and demonstration projects piloting new technologies to improve the Baltic Sea's environmental condition. They finance projects in climate mitigation and climate adaptation, pollution prevention, circular economy, protection and sustainable use of nature, biodiversity, water and marine resources.
