CARB-X

CARB-X is a global non-profit partnership accelerating the development of antibacterial products to combat drug-resistant bacteria. Their focus is on funding and supporting projects with diverse approaches and mechanisms of action, specifically targeting the most serious resistant bacteria identified on global priority lists and syndromes with the greatest global morbidity and mortality. CARB-X provides non-dilutive funding, scientific, regulatory, and business support to product developers, focusing on both therapeutics and preventatives from early lead discovery through preclinical development and into Phase 1 clinical trials, as well as diagnostics from feasibility through prototype development. CARB-X fills a critical gap in antibiotic development, addressing the antibiotic resistance crisis driven by bacterial evolution, antibiotic overuse, and poor economic incentives for antibiotic development. They are committed to stewardship and access, ensuring the availability and responsible use of new products globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This includes requiring product developers to create Stewardship and Access Plans, outlining strategies for responsible stewardship and access. CARB-X also embraces an “aligned-by-design” model for diagnostics, where investment must meet the needs of the CARB-X-funded therapeutic and prevention portfolio. CARB-X’s strategy is designed to create efficiencies across multiple product developers. Portfolio Acceleration Tools (PATs) were launched in 2020 to improve understanding of common development issues, and potentially generate funding calls around focused areas of innovation and development. The outcomes generated from the PATs are intended to benefit the larger AMR community.
