Gaorong Capital
Gaorong Capital, originally founded as Banyan Capital in January 2014 by three former IDG Capital employees in Beijing, China, rebranded in 2018 for better recognition among Chinese entrepreneurs. The firm rapidly raised its first fund of US$206 million in just two months, oversubscribed from an initial US$150 million target, attracting over 40 investors including entrepreneurs from Tencent, Alibaba, and Xiaomi, as well as family offices, fund-of-funds, and institutions. Positioned as 'China's Founders' Fund,' it manages four USD funds and four RMB funds totaling around CNY11 billion, backed by world-class LPs such as sovereign funds, pension funds, university endowments, and corporate leaders. Notable portfolio companies include unicorns and decacorns like Pinduoduo, Meituan, Huya.com, Nuro, Xiaomi, and recent investments such as Pulnovo Medical (Series C, 2025), HashKey (Series A-II, $30M, 2025), with 418 total investments, 27 exits, and 19 unicorns. Gaorong's investment philosophy emphasizes early and growth-stage bets in TMT (Technology, Media, Telecommunications), new consumption, new technology, and healthcare sectors, building complementary ecosystems by selecting synergistic companies and leveraging founder-investors for resources and expertise. Geographically, it primarily targets China (268 investments), with some in the US (16), Singapore (7), and others, focusing on empowering outstanding founders through industry networks.
